The Principles of Photographic Skin Analysis
Digital facial photography has revolutionized clinical dermatology and aesthetic consultations. However, capturing skin digitally introduces distinct optical and computational challenges that require disciplined scientific handling.
A digital photograph captures light reflected from the skin surface (diffuse reflection and specular highlights). Unlike high-magnification clinical dermatoscopy, a smartphone photograph cannot visualize deep dermal architecture, histopathology, or cellular atypia. It excels, however, at quantifying macro-level surface characteristics: blemish frequency, localized erythema, pigment uniformity, and surface roughness.
